International Day for Tolerance: Tolerance means that tolerance is the rich heritage of diversity of the whole world. On November 16, 1996, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 51/95 and declared November 16 as the International Day for Tolerance.

The principle of tolerance was adopted by the member states of UNESCO on 16 November 1995. After this, 16 November 1996 was announced to be celebrated as Tolerance Day. According to the principle of tolerance, tolerance is not both indulgence and indifference, but it is the respect of diverse rich cultures of the world, human expression and humanity.

Why is International Day for Tolerance celebrated?

It recognizes the universal rights and freedoms of man in the form of tolerance. People have different natures depending on the culture, environment, beliefs etc. of different countries. But through tolerance, the existence of different places and regions of the world can be understood and ensured.

The existence of human rights and their fundamental freedom can be understood and recognized only through tolerance. The richness of the characteristics of the mixed communities of different color forms living in the world can be recognized only through tolerance.

International Day for Tolerance

International Tolerance Day is organized every year on 16 November and the award is also given every second year. Whoever becomes the winner is awarded an amount of one lakh US dollars. This award is given in honor of the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Indian writer and artist and diplomat Madanjit Singh, who imbibed peace and dedication for a lifetime.

UNESCO always does the work of protecting and promoting the diversity of culture, language and knowledge. So that there is an opportunity to know and understand all the cultures and perspectives of the world.

At present, there is unrest in the world. Many political and geographical changes are taking place in the world. The role of tolerance can be effective and fruitful in dealing with these challenges. At present workers are being seen in social tolerance as compared to earlier.

It is often seen that human rights are being violated on a large scale through violence and extremism. Communal conflicts are also being seen as a result of cultural frenzy and discrimination. After many types of displacements, a feeling of hatred is also arising in the minds of the people towards the refugees.

Through tolerance, harmony can be generated towards the exploited and deprived classes, refugees. Only tolerance can do the work of nurturing them for good deeds. In this way, fear, mistrust and violence can be controlled through tolerance, while respecting human rights and nurturing their participation.

UNESCO declaration on the principles of tolerance has been implemented in the year 1995 itself in the whole world. Communal tension, hatred etc. social evils can be removed through social harmony, dialogue and mutual understanding. Tolerance inculcates a sense of responsibility in a person.

What is the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize?

Madanjit Singh was born on 16 April 1924 in present-day Lahore, Pakistan. Apart from being a well-known writer, Madanjit Singh was internationally knowledgeable about art and politics. He was closely associated with the principles, ideals and programs of UNESCO. He has worked as India’s ambassador in Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

UNESCO’s Executive Board instituted the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Award every 02 years for significant contribution to tolerance and non-violence due to its due contribution and social harmony.UNESCO on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi (from 16 May The decision was taken in the meeting of Paris and Fez on 04th June).

Madanjit Singh formed the South Asia Foundation (SAF) in the year 2000 to promote cultural, educational and economic development most effectively.

UNESCO also nominated Mr. Singh as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador on 16 November 2000 in order to promote his generosity and tolerance.

Mr. Singh has been instrumental in promoting his wisdom and understanding and promoting peace. Shri Singh is remembered as a source of inspiration for people living in many religions, cultures and countries.

Shri Singh was world famous as a writer, politician and artist. Shri Singh left this world on 06 January 2013 by taking the last breath of his life. He will always be remembered for his noble deeds throughout his life.
