In this post we will learn how to apply for a new Pan card for NRI and how to download a PAN card application for NRI. The full form of PAN card is Permanent Account Number. Which is issued by the Income Tax Department in India. The PAN card has a 10 digit unique number. In which 06 digits are alphabet and 04 digits are numeric. PAN card can be obtained by any person/institution or organization.
A PAN card is a statutory document, which also acts as an identity card. It is mandatory for any income tax payer and individual/institution/organization to have a PAN card. No type of financial transaction can be done without a PAN card in India.
Any Indian or foreign national who wants to do any type of financial transaction in India will need a PAN card. PAN card is issued by the Income Tax Department, an organization working under the Government of India. It can be used as a unique ID card. It is used for opening a bank account, investing in the Indian market, buying and investing land, house and property in India, filing returns etc. NRIs can apply for a PAN card both online and offline.
Online applications can be made by visiting the official website of the department. While applying online, along with entering the necessary details, the documents have to be scanned and uploaded on the website. On the other hand, to apply offline, you should download the 49AA form and enter all the necessary details clearly in it. And by attaching the necessary documents with the form, it should be submitted to the Indian Embassy or to the PAN Card Service Center.
For making NRI PAN card, passport, proof of residence abroad and passport size photograph are required. NRIs who hold Indian citizenship should indicate the Indian address located in India in the application form. Indian or foreign NRIs do not require an Aadhaar card. Passport is enough. The PAN card is dispatched to the applicant’s address in about 20 days after the application is made.

NRI PAN card is issued to NRIs or foreign nationals living abroad. NRI PAN card is used for doing business in India and for carrying out tax related activities. NRI PAN card is similar in appearance to a normal PAN card. Financial transactions can be done in India using NRI PAN.
There are following differences between NRI Pan Card and normal PAN card-
1- Normal PAN card is issued for Indian citizens.
2- NRI Pan Card Pan card can be issued for both non-resident Indian and foreign citizens.
3- Indian citizens can use the normal PAN card as an identity card along with paying taxes.
4- NRI PAN CARD is used by foreign or non-resident Indians for tax payment and business related needs.
5- Aadhaar card is mandatory for Indian citizens to make a PAN card.
6- Aadhaar card is not required to make NRI PAN CARD. NRI citizens or foreign nationals can obtain NRI PAN card using their passport.
You should submit PAN form 49A if you are an Indian NRI. NRI citizens of foreign descent, however, should use the 49AA application form. Both forms can be submitted offline or online. If you prefer to apply online, you can do so by going to the UTITSL or Protein websites. This post includes a diagram that visually explains the entire online application procedure.
Note: NSDL was the previous name for the protein website. It is today referred to as protein.
No, there is no distinction between non-resident and resident PAN cards; they are both the same. The sole distinction is that while filling out an online application, Indian nationals must complete Form 49A, while NRIs and nationals of any other country must complete Form 49AA.
